GERAK INDEPENDENT 2nd Webinar by MAJU REVEALS CROWD-FUNDING FOR DIRECT TO RAKYAT SYSTEM AND TAWFIK TUN DR ISMAIL OFFER AS FIRST INDEPENDENT MP CANDIDATE FOR NEXT GE

Malaysian Action for Justice and Unity Foundation (MAJU) finally made known concrete plans of our joint initiative with like-minded NGOs and NGIs, called GERAK INDEPENDENT – together with I Am The Third Force, KitaBantuKita, and Malaysia First. The announcement was made during MAJU’s 9pm webinar series last night entitled: Your First Reluctant Statesman.

The panel of seasoned national activists, Haris Ibrahim and Arun Dorasamy, and ex-MP Tawfik Tun Dr Ismail expanded on the need to push for a significant bloc of independent candidates to be members of Parliament for the next GE. The reasoning being that political parties have failed the rakyat for over 30 years and are beholden to their warlords and quest for positions rather than for the ultimate good of reform that can only happen in Parliament. The Gerak Independent movement is to deliver these independent MPs to protect, preserve and give the fullest rights guaranteed under the Constitution and promised progressive initiatives for the rakyat and the Nation.

The targeted 15 to 20 MP with values, capability and integrity will be strongly vetted through a system to be created by MAJU and its associates in Gerak Independent. MAJU also announced a crowd-funding initiative for members of the public to fund a digital mobile-application called PeoplElect and all the supporting requirements to sustain such a sophisticated system. The whole system will be the delivery mechanism to bring quality candidates direct to the rakyat and provide a direct two-way channel of communication between the rakyat and the candidates and later elected independent MPs, thus bypassing the political parties, their warlords and party agendas.

“We want to democratise the Rakyat’s engagement with their elected parliamentary representatives”, said Haris Ibrahim in the webinar. He continued, “We know even that small bloc of progressive, pro-rakyat candidates of integrity and capability will emerge as a consistent power-broker and swing vote catalyst to ensure reform agendas can be pushed through and change the way Malaysia will be governed moving forward”.

Arun Dorasamy echoed the sentiment that with the direct-to-rakyat system, a well-vetted bloc of independent MPs can be reasonably assured, and their performance can also be continuously reviewed throughout their terms in Parliament.

Tawfik Tun Dr Ismail personally made the offer to be Gerak Independent’s first candidate for the next GE that will go through the PeoplElect system to be constructed by MAJU. He said, “I believe it is time that we go direct to the rakyat to bring the agenda of an equal Malaysia for all, free from the hegemony of partisan party politics and their selfish warlords. I left politics disillusioned by what they represent but I think it is time for Malaysians who truly want to serve to make a stand for the sake of our Nation and our next generations.” He added that time is not on our side anymore and the rakyat must take up Gerak Independent initiative with a real sense of urgency.

The webinar last night concluded that Gerak Independent will keep these discussions on-going with the next episode on September 12th as part of its series of webinars on the initiative. It promised further announcement of candidates for the next GE that will fire up the expectations of Malaysians hungry for change and fed up with political party hegemony and misgovernance of the Nation.
